Elena Rybakina has locked in her place in the championship match at the Ningbo Open after defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider in the semifinal. The world number one, who is currently defending her title, closed out the match with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This victory ensures she will face unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's final, a contest that could see Rybakina claim the trophy for the second consecutive year.
The path to the final was not without challenges for the Australian Open and US Open champion. Rybakina arrived in the eastern Chinese city following a rough patch in her schedule. She had recently suffered a significant loss in Beijing and was forced to withdraw from the Wuhan tournament due to a foot injury. Despite this difficult run, she managed to find her rhythm against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, producing moments of her finest tennis even as she displayed some inconsistency throughout the match.
In the opening set, Rybakina attempted to seize control early with aggressive play from deep in the court. However, a sudden drop in form required her to fight for the set point, which she eventually secured on her 11th opportunity. The second set mirrored the first, with the 27-year-old three-time Grand Slam winner struggling with her first-serve accuracy. She managed to break serve to go 4-3 ahead but was then broken to love in the 10th game. Rybakina responded with powerful hitting to regain the lead and served with much more confidence to finish the job.
Rybakina acknowledged the difficulty of the contest, noting that Shnaider's left-handed style presented a specific hurdle. She explained that switching patterns during rallies was a minor issue for her, but she was pleased to have won in straight sets. This is a relevant detail for the upcoming final, as her opponent, Fernandez, is also a left-hander who will likely pose a similar tactical test.
Fernandez earned her spot in the final by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova by the exact same scoreline of 6-3, 7-5. The match took place at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. With the semifinalists now determined, the tournament enters its final day with a matchup that features two players who have both navigated tough draws to reach the end.
Looking ahead, Rybakina aims to sharpen her game in the final before moving on to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo the following week. Her season will conclude with the defense of her WTA Finals title at Indian Wells, which begins on November 8. The Ningbo Open serves as a crucial preparatory event for that final stretch of the season.
When asked about the prospect of winning back-to-back titles in Ningbo, Rybakina remained measured in her expectations. She stated that it is never easy and that she intends to fight and give her all in the match. Her performance against Shnaider suggests she is in good form, though the consistency of her serve remains a factor to watch as she prepares for Sunday's decisive encounter.
