Anthropic Targets Professionals With New Task-Automating App

The company’s latest tool, built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, focuses on business workflows and background automation rather than personal errands.

Anthropic has entered the crowded market of personal and productivity assistants with the launch of a new application called Claude Duet. The company is positioning this tool specifically for professionals and small businesses, aiming to distinguish it from the wave of consumer-focused agents currently launching every week. By focusing on workflow automation and task management, the new app seeks to compete directly with established rivals including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo.

The primary strategic move here is a clear delineation between personal and professional use cases. Anthropic explicitly noted that Duet is not designed to handle typical personal errands, such as booking tickets or managing casual daily needs. Unlike some other agents in the market, Duet does not display its browser usage in real-time to the user. This distinction is intended to appeal to users who require focused, business-oriented assistance rather than a general-purpose digital butler.

Instead of managing personal logistics, Duet focuses on generating actionable insights from user data. The application can construct daily briefings, create custom dashboards, and suggest specific actions based on the information provided by the user. This proactive approach is central to the app's design, as it monitors ongoing tasks to deliver recommendations without requiring constant manual input from the user.

A key technical feature of Claude Duet is its ability to operate in the background. Built upon the Claude Opus 5.5 model, the agent can complete tasks within its own virtual machine while the user continues with other activities. If the agent encounters a step that requires specific approval or input, it will pause and return to the user for confirmation before proceeding. This allows for a seamless workflow where the AI handles the heavy lifting of execution while the human retains final decision-making authority on sensitive matters.

The launch of Duet coincides with a broader industry shift from simple AI assistants to autonomous agents that can work on behalf of users. Many competitors are increasingly targeting business use cases to capture this demand. For instance, while Meta’s Muse is primarily a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with connections to various applications. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has emphasized a business slant through its integration with professional tools, signaling a market-wide trend toward specialized B2B AI solutions.

To facilitate these business workflows, Duet connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive integration allows the agent to interact with a wide range of third-party services and tools. Furthermore, the application has the capability to make online purchases on behalf of users, utilizing Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay for transactions. This functionality extends the agent’s role from data management to active commerce.

Security and user control remain priorities in this design. Anthropic stated that sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, will require explicit user approval. However, the agent is restricted in its financial powers; it will not trade securities or move money between bank accounts. To further protect user data, the company released a new classifier that scans each message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out. By default, the agent is programmed to turn down requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification numbers.

Claude Duet is currently available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web through Claude.ai. The service is offered to Pro and Max customers as part of a research preview. To access the new tool, users must currently join a waitlist, indicating that the platform is still in an early stage of public rollout. This phased approach allows Anthropic to manage load and gather feedback as it competes in an increasingly saturated field of AI agents.
